Trip 1: Jun 21, 22 (day 1 & 2)

June 22nd, 2018|Categories: Trip Reports|

Hello anglers,

We left on our first trip of the 2018 season on a trip sponsored by Accurate Fishing Products. We travelled to Coronado Islands to try for yellowtail. There’s plenty of activity here, and now we’re working on what they are hungry for! We got a sample this afternoon, and plan to stay for another day.

Afternoon update:

We had lots of action today with yellowtail. The best method for landing a yellowtail has been a flyline with sardine on 25 pound line and a 2/0 hook. A few fish were caught on artificial lures as well. The weather is great with sunny skies this afternoon and calm seas.

Here is the Gantz family with a sample of the yellowtail caught this morning. Craig is a long time Searcher angler. He brought his son and daughter with him on this trip for a full family experience.  Lots of fun was had by all today.

June 16 update:

Photo taken 14 June

Our spotter plane pilot continues to see tremendous schools of bluefin tuna breaking the surface. Recent reports from boats fishing in the area confirm the pilot’s findings. We are excited to get out there and try our hand at getting them to bite!

Jun 7 report:

Hello anglers:
We’re in the final stages of getting the boat ready for the fishing season and really excited to get started!

Tuna seen from spotter plane on 7 June 2018

The SAC spotter plane has been flying for us recently and what the pilot has seen is pretty exciting! He’s seen multiple schools of bluefin tuna (up to 40 pounds) within 150 miles of San Diego, which is a tremendous sign for trips in the 1.5-day trip range. In addition, the water conditions look great.

It’s time to get your tackle ready for the start to a great season! Here’s a checklist to prepare for these bluefin tuna:

  • Live bait outfits ranging from 25-60 pound with matching fluorocarbon.
  • Circle hooks so you take the abrasion factor out of the equation. Video on hooks!
  • Don’t forget to bring your flat fall lures with the appropriate rod and reel combo.
  • Have a 2-speed reel in case we come across a school of bigger fish.
  • Check for trip availability aboard Searcher here: Searcher Sportfishing schedule.

We’ve gathered up some blog posts that will assist you in getting your fishing season started. Start clicking below!

Team Searcher in Loreto!

June 4th, 2018|Categories: Capt Art's Blog|

Edwin Reyes and Ken Franke (of SAC) organized a hugely successful trip in Loreto for California sportfishing. Thank you!

We joined Sportfishing Association of CA (Ken Franke and Edwin Reyes), venerable Baja photojournalist Gary Graham, and Pete Gray for the Let’s Talk Hook-up radio show which aired on Saturday, June 2 as a live remote in lovely Loreto, Baja California Sur.

The goal? Make new sportfishing friends, experience all the area has to offer for anglers and travellers, and report back on how we can support each other.

Sunrise from rooms are a highlight of a stay at La Mision hotel in Loreto, Baja California Sur.

Loreto is famous for seafood! Especially chocolate clams (at top), fresh cabrilla and yellowtail, and scallops. Ask Captain Art for a review!

It was a quick and easy flight from Tijuana on Calafia airlines that brought us to this seaside town of Loreto where we were welcomed to the gorgeous La Mision hotel for our stay. The ultramarine blue Sea of Cortez is at the town’s front porch and invites one to fish, dive, kayak, snorkel, and enjoy fresh seafood in a stunning location.

WE’ll post more about this special trip and share photos from Gary Graham. But for now,you can tune in to hear all about our adventures, including fish reports, from 7-9 am on AM1090 or download the app and listen anywhere! Show archive here: SHOW ARCHIVE

The 6th annual Chocolate Clam and Gastronomic Festival ended with fireworks! Mariachi band enteritained us while we sampled food from many Loreto restaurants.

Some services we enjoyed in Loreto:
La Mision hotel–Simply the best stay in Loreto!
Vive Loreto Tours and Diving–Diving, snorkeling, fishing, whalewatching, and land tours

Aero Calafia–Flights from Tijuana direct to Loreto

Baja Peninsula Adventure Tours–Fishing, kayak/mother ship fishing, and more!
Chocolate Clam Festival, golf, tournaments, and other events in Loreto
