Trip 7 (2.5 day) July 15 Mid-day Report

July 15th, 2016|Trip Reports|

Howdy anglers,

Slow start here for us this morning, but the weather and the spirits are high 🙂

We did catch some yellowfin tuna up to 15lbs and also found a couple kelps that had some nice grade yellowtail on them – just like the one pictured above with “El Guapo”.

There are signs of tuna around but they aren’t in the mood yet…so we’re gonna keep on trying after enjoying our Chef Charley lunch 🙂  We should have a good afternoon, wish us luck!

Good angling and hope to see ya on the water soon!

Trip 6 (1.5 day) July 13 Report

July 14th, 2016|Trip Reports|

Howdy anglers,

We had a great afternoon fishing for yellowfin tuna – we were getting tuna on the troll and then those that were not trolling were catching fish on fly line sardines on a 2/0 hook. Some of the tuna were also caught on artificial lures like flat falls.

We had several stops on tuna from 10-16lbs and then found another kelp with some more very nice grade yellowtail.  The weather is nice and looks good for the next couple days as well.

Here’s a photo of the last yellowtail caught aboard today by Chris Petro – may be the jackpot winner too – being hoisted up by Capt Ryan Stahl.  Posing for a photo with Bootz at departure is continuing to be a lucky charm for our anglers!

We’re headed in to be back at the docks tomorrow morning – we will be coming back out again on a 2.5 day trip.

Good angling and hope to see ya on the water soon!

Trip 6 (1.5 day) July 13 Mid-day report

July 13th, 2016|Trip Reports|

Howdy anglers: We are enjoying another great day aboard Searcher today! We have had some good luck fishing on very nice yellowtail up to 30 pounds. We are stopping on a kelps to get these fish to bite. Most yellows today were caught on 30-lb line with a fly-line sardine and a 2/0 J hook. Our photo today is Malea Miller of Bakersfield, CA who is fishing with her dad and brother on our Shimano-sponsored trip. Malea posed for a photo with Bootz before the trip began – and it looks like the Bootz lucky streak is continuing! The Millers and other passengers are able to try out some of the quality rods/reels, thanks to Shimano and on-board instructor, Alex Plambeck.sstrip6shimalex

Tuna fishing has been slow so far today, but we have reports of some being caught above us. Wish us luck and stay tuned right here for all the news from the field!

Trip 5 (1.5 day) July 11 Report

July 12th, 2016|Trip Reports|

Howdy anglers,

It was a great afternoon on the water!  We had steady action pretty much all day: stopping on kelp, catching yellowtail up to 20 lbs and some dorado.  We had a great afternoon on yellowfin tuna, too.

The weather looks like it is going to lay down the next couple of days – good news since we are headed back to San Diego with a boat of happy anglers tonight, with another trip departing on the afternoon of July 12.

Here is Patti Looney with her dorado caught on a kelp stop today.

This afternoon’s tip is: the ticket to getting a tuna today after we got trolling bites was slide fishing with an artificial lure.

Good angling and hope to see ya on the water soon!

Trip 5 (1.5 day) July 11 Mid-day Report!

July 11th, 2016|Trip Reports|

Howdy anglers,

It’s been a great morning on the water today! Although we haven’t seen a bunch of kelps this morning, the ones we are finding, we are catching fish on! We have been short-stopping on yellowfin tuna as well. We have noticed that pink trolling lures seem to be getting most of the tuna.

Here is a photo of San Diego local Dave Pitonyak with one of of the yellows we’ve been catching on the kelps.  He posed for a photo with Bootz before departure, looks like that brought him some extra luck!

Going for more fish – good angling and hope to see ya on the water!  One spot just opened up on our next trip leaving on July 12!

Will send another report later.

Trip 4 (2-day) July 7-9 Seeker Rods sponsored

July 9th, 2016|Trip Reports|

Howdy anglers: We had a pretty tough trip for catching fish. We stopped on lots of kelp paddies and watch fish swimming under them, but the fish aren’t biting what we have to offer. Water conditions are just right, and so is the weather–now we just need the fish to cooperate. Tex Gough of San Diego, CA captured the jackpot with a 25# yellowtail.

Seeker Rods rep Sophia Huynh brought loads of promo gear like hats and shirts, and two rods to give away. We are so grateful to sponsors like Seeker Rods who support San Diego sportfishing and provide quality gear for our anglers.

Thank you, Sophia and Seeker!

Trip 4 (2-day) July 7-9 is off and running!

Our 2-day trip departed last night with 17 happy passengers who were ready to fish! After checking out the haul of Seeker swag brought aboard by pro-staffer Sophie Huynh, our anglers gathered on the deck to wave goodbye as they departed for the fishing grounds. Happy angling!

Reports from the field to follow – stay tuned to the blog!

July 6th, 2016|Trip Reports|

We love this great photo from the field this afternoon! 16-year old angler, Kendall Swanson, and a beauty of a yellowfin tuna!

Here’s Capt Aaron’s noontime report: “Howdy anglers, Today we’ve had beautiful weather. We are seeing lots of kelps and have stopped on for some. We’re getting small yellowfin tuna and yellowtail. Conditions are right–lots of kelp–but not too many fish on them.
Here’s a photo of Tom James with a nice yellowfin tuna just caught a few minutes ago on a Zuker Mexican Flag.
We have lots of daylight left and the weather forecast is looking good. We’re going to keep working at it so wish us luck.
More later, Team Searcher”trip3tomyftsm
